Youth Assistant Instructor Makena Mathews

Makena Mathews began her Jiu-Jitsu journey at 10 and has since grown into a dedicated and skilled athlete. Now holding the rank of orange belt, Makena has demonstrated an above-average dedication to the training, competing in four tournaments where she consistently showcased her technical proficiency and determination.

In 2021, after only a year of training, Makena was invited to join the Black Belt Club, our Elite Youth Jiu-Jitsu Program. Her time in there was a transformative part of her Jiu-Jitsu journey. Being a part of this prestigious group has pushed her to refine her skills, elevating her technique and mindset. The challenges and discipline of the Black Belt Club have not only helped Makena become a more advanced practitioner but also deepened her love for the sport.

Beyond improving her Jiu-Jitsu, the Program has allowed her to form lasting friendships with like-minded individuals, creating a supportive community that has enriched her personal and athletic growth. She was then upgraded to the Teens Program in 2023, where she is currently thriving. She continues to refine her techniques and challenge herself alongside her peers. Her dedication to improving and passion for the sport drive her to consistently push her limits, making her an active and engaged member of the class.

Her passion for Jiu-Jitsu deepened not only through her own training but also through her growing interest in teaching. In the Summer of 2023, Makena discovered her love for helping others learn the art, and since then, she has been actively involved in teaching younger students, sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport. Her ability to connect with her students and inspire them has become one of the highlights of her journey, and she is excited to continue developing her skills and her role as an instructor.

Makena aspires to be a Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu one day and make a positive, lasting impact on the students she teaches. She’s planning to attend college for music to grow as an artist and follow her passion for the arts.
