Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's of Adult Jiu-Jitsu

What does "Jiu-Jitsu" mean?

Jiu-Jitsu translates to "the gentle art"; it is referred to as such because it utilizes leverage and balance rather than force and strength. Also, the finishing submissions are viewed as a more humane alternative to striking.

What is the difference between Classical or Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

There are numerous differences. The main one is that Brazilian Jiu-Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) focuses more on ground grappling while Classical Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes standing grappling and striking. All types of Jiu-Jitsu are based on submitting your opponent; however, BJJ is the only form of Jiu-Jitsu that heavily emphasizes positional strategy and control before doing so. This strategy will allow you to be completely dominant, safe, and calm to apply a finishing hold. Another fundamental difference is that in BJJ, students will have the chance to practice and drill moves while their partner resists 100%.

Is Jiu-Jitsu all grappling and wrestling?

The Jiu-Jitsu we teach includes standing techniques, takedowns, and ground fighting techniques. It is a fact that nearly all real fights end up on the ground. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu always prepares its practitioners for a physically superior opponent who is much bigger and stronger. On the ground, leverage can be used to even out the playing field, allowing you to control and submit even the most prominent foes. We teach all facets of Jiu-Jitsu, including defense against stand-up aggression and ground fighting strategies. So you will be learning how to deal with an individual from the beginning.

Why do Jiu-Jitsu practitioners wear a uniform (gi)?

The uniform is a vital learning tool for your success. It teaches you proper grips and provides additional comfort while training. Fighting with the gi requires a high level of precision and attention to detail, two essential tools for efficient Jiu-Jitsu. In addition, the gi creates a lot of friction between you, your opponent, and the ground, helping your stamina and overall conditioning.

I'm not in the best shape. Can I still take a Jiu-Jitsu Class?

Of course! Our beginner classes are an excellent way to get into shape. Not only will you learn the essential skills of self-defense, but you will also focus on muscle strengthening, endurance, cardio, and flexibility.

What is the belt system in Jiu-Jitsu?

Belts in BJJ include white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, and black. Each successive belt represents an increased mastery of the art.

How long does it take to obtain a black belt?

This varies for each individual and their level of commitment; however, it usually takes between 8 and 15 years.

Is Jiu-Jitsu effective against other styles of martial arts?

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu has consistently proved its supremacy in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competitions. Evidence of this can be found in the videos "Gracie in Action I & II," a documentary in which the Gracie Family took on and defeated all challengers for over 70 years without losing one single fight.

What are some of the physical benefits of training Jiu-Jitsu?

BJJ will improve conditioning, strength, coordination, flexibility, reflexes, and overall motor-skills.

Is Jiu-Jitsu beneficial for women?

Jiu-Jitsu is excellent for rape prevention and other forms of self-defense necessary for women since most attacks occur on the ground. Strategic grips and proper application of leverage and body weight distribution will allow women to escape from attackers standing or on the ground.

How are classes structured?

Class includes several plyometric exercises and movements to help improve conditioning, coordination, flexibility, and strength. This period will be followed by the technique of the week demonstrated by the instructor, which is drilled for the remainder of the class. A 30-minute sparring session for the intermediate and advanced students is held immediately after each class (intermediate/advanced classes).

I have a hectic schedule; how many classes per week do you offer?

To accommodate your hectic schedule, each of our Jiu-Jitsu programs (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced) run several times per week in the morning and evening hours, allowing you to customize a training schedule that suits your needs. Besides our instructional program, we also provide "open mat" times for those who want to come in and work out independently. We also offer private lessons, which can be scheduled at several time slots throughout the day.

I have never done martial arts before, and I feel a little apprehensive. How easy is it to get started?

Most people feel some anxiety about starting a martial arts program, hence why we created our Beginners' 12-week program. Individual attention is a feature in every class, allowing all students to progress quickly and confidently towards the more advanced programs. This system will make sure you familiarize yourself with the Academy's culture, its instructors and help you feel comfortable with the material you will be learning.

Do I have to enter competitions?

Competition is always completely optional. Our school has produced many local, national, and international champions. However, many of our students enjoy the training and its benefits without ever participating in any competition. Accomplished competitors themselves, Professors Crosley Gracie and Ryan Murphy understand the difference between training for a competition and training for self-defense in Jiu-Jitsu. Our school provides a positive environment for students with a great approach to personal excellence pursuit and realistic self-defense.

I don't have much time; what is the commitment required to progress at an average pace?

Just 60 minutes, twice a week, will produce exceptional results. We want to make sure you don't have to give up all your free time to benefit from our programs. If the class schedule conflicts with work hours, individual lessons are always an excellent alternative to speed up your learning process.

How much does a membership cost?

We have various programs and flexible payment plans for your convenience. Without understanding your specific needs, it is difficult to recommend a program and pinpoint an exact price; however, feel free to speak to one of our representatives, and we'll work with you to make them fit into your budget.

Are there any additional training fees, such as equipment, testing fees, etc.?

The only additional costs will be for your equipment and your belts when you're ready to move up in rank. These are not "testing fees," as we do not charge for testing for new belt ranks. Students are evaluated weekly and considered for promotion without doing any tests, except for Black Belt.

Why do you require a 12-month agreement?

We want to ensure you give yourself a real chance to see how many benefits you will get from the training. One or two months of practice won't provide new students the results in conditioning, skill, and other physical and mental attributes that a minimum of a full year will. The longer you train, the more benefits you will experience, and the better at self-defense you will be. We guarantee that with consistent training from the get-go, Jiu-Jitsu training will become something you will not be able to live without!

I'm not sure if I want to commit to a minimum of 12 months, any suggestions?

Well, if you aren't sure if you'll like Jiu-Jitsu or not, then we recommend you book an appointment for a class observation; that way, you'll see first-hand how we run our program. If you'd like to proceed in getting on the mat for an actual trial class, ask a staff member about completing a membership application. Once approved, we'll get you booked and you can decide for yourself if it’s something you wish to commit to or not.

FAQ's of Children's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

How old does my child have to be to start training?

We recommend that children start at four years old. However, no two kids are the same; there can be differences in coordination and maturity. We are willing to evaluate children younger than four.

What is the difference between Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and other forms of martial arts for kids?

Jiu-Jitsu will teach your children that they don't need to learn how to punch and kick to control and protect themselves from bullying. Instead of learning moves through katas or prearranged movements carried out on a cooperative training partner, they will learn how to apply grappling techniques on a resisting training partner who's not cooperating and is counteracting with his moves. Strategic grips and positioning control make Jiu-Jitsu.

How large are your class sizes, and what's the ratio of Instructor/Student?

Class sizes may range between 18-30 students per class, depending on age group. Each time our class sizes increase, we accommodate an increase in instructors per class as well. We attempt to maintain a 1 to 10 ratio of Instructor/student; however, we train our children to maintain discipline, respect, and focus throughout the entire course of practice, regardless of how many instructors are present.

My child is already very energetic. I'm afraid the training will encourage aggression. Is this true?

Training at our academy will provide an outlet for children to channel aggression and excess energy. Our children's programs focus on developing behavioral and attitudinal aspects of martial arts such as respect, confidence, discipline, and self-control. By providing a fun and safe atmosphere for kids, we can foster a healthy environment in which they can learn and develop not only self-defense skills but also life skills. They learn Jiu-Jitsu as a tool for personal growth and development, not as a weapon to cause harm. Once ready, they will be sparring daily in class, often with bigger and more experienced children than them. Not winning every match will teach them humility and respect. Kids learn to treat others as they want to be treated. Often, violent kids before they joined our program changed and became non-violent. However, we teach them to take action whenever physically threatened by anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Will my child have a hard time if they aren't athletic?

Often children who don't find success in team sports come to Martial Arts, and they love it! That's because, with martial arts, you go at your own pace. Team sports may harm the self-esteem of children who aren't very athletic. When they don't perform well, other kids can be pretty mean, affecting their self-esteem. But with Martial Arts, they can't let anyone down. Our students are never asked to do things beyond their capacity. Some kids learn quicker than others, but those who advance quickly are not valued more than the kids who move slowly. Everyone is greatly encouraged, regardless of their athletic level, and praised for achieving things they couldn't before.

Is the curriculum safe for my child?

We take our students' safety very seriously. The attention to safety and the student's well-being always comes first. Proper self-defense and martial arts training, however, includes contact. If it doesn't, how can it possibly be called self-defense? Being that Jiu-Jitsu is a combat sport, there is a chance for injuries to occur; however, by being extremely strict in our enforcement of mat rules and etiquette, we drastically reduce those chances.

Is Jiu-Jitsu just for boys, or can my girl take it too?

Girls love Jiu-Jitsu just as much and get the same fulfillment out of it as boys do. Also, if we have learned anything in our years of teaching, girls are just as tough as boys. Many are even tougher! So you don't have to worry about your little girl getting hurt or feeling scared because she'll be practicing with boys. The boys may even be the ones who are afraid of them, as we have learned that, on average, girls are fiercer than boys.

Why should I enroll my child at Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu? What qualifications do your instructors have to teach my child?

We believe we offer the most consistent, modern, and overall atmosphere for personal growth when it comes to martial arts and self-defense training in East Contra Costa County. This is due not only to our experience and mastery of our craft but to the fact that we are life-long students of our product. We believe in going through life, seeking professional growth daily, and applying such knowledge where our students are constantly evolving as well. Professor Crosley Gracie is a third-generation martial arts and self-defense teacher, gym owner, and fighter with over 35 years of Martial Arts and Combat Sports experience. He has been teaching adult programs since 1997 and youth classes since 2007. You can learn more about Professor Gracie's bio by clicking here. How are classes structured?

The techniques differ based on what age group we teach, but the format is the same across all five youth programs. We break down the classes into three stages: Warm-ups, which includes several plyometric exercises and movements designed to improve their athleticism; technique drilling, to help them develop skill retention, muscle memory, and reflexes; and live training, which is where they entirely resist against one another, trying to execute their moves while defending their training partner's attacks. And for obvious reasons, this is the most significant factor in boosting their confidence.

Will my child have fun? Will they want to stick with the program?

To teach anyone, but especially children, you must earn their respect and show them what's acceptable and what's not. Our students learn to know when to focus and work hard and when it's time to have fun. They will learn self-defense, respect, discipline, honor, and discover that hard work and effort always pay off and bring positive results—all in a strict yet fun and engaging environment. As far as your child wanting to stick to the program, it will largely depend on your commitment to keeping them in it. We have an extremely low cancellation rate due to a lack of interest, even lower in the initial 12-month term. While we understand that not every student will train to black belt rank, we are dedicated to doing all we can to extend the mat lifespan of every student.

Why do you require a 12-month agreement?

Most parents enroll their children in martial arts as a tool to give their children life skills, such as improved self-defense, confidence, respect, focus, athleticism, and social skills. These attributes will not take in one or two months of training. It's a process that sometimes takes longer for certain personalities than for others. So we ask for the same commitment back from the parents. This is a team effort. We have a 100% rate of success in improving the overall lifestyle of all students who have committed to the training. And the longer they train, the more positive changes will be seen!

I'm not sure if I want to commit to a minimum of 12 months. Are there any other options?

At this point, the question to be asked is, "what is my ultimate goal in enrolling your child into a martial arts program?" If your answer is to improve their confidence, social skills, focus, respect, discipline, and last but not least, become bully-proof, then none of that will take place without a real commitment on your part. And quite honestly, without said commitment on your part, it just won't be worth all the work we put in to train them initially. Martial arts training is unlike any other sport or activity. It's a type of education that can't be instilled in just a few months.

Are there any additional training fees, such as equipment, testing fees, etc.?

The only additional costs will be for your child's equipment and their belt promotions (when eligible). These are not "testing fees," as we do not charge for testing for new ranks. Students are evaluated every week and are considered for promotion without any tests.

FAQ's of Muay Thai Kickboxing

What is Muay Thai exactly?

Muay Thai is a form of kickboxing developed in Thailand. It is often called the art of eight weapons because practitioners utilize their feet, hands, knees, and elbows to damage their opponents! While many people study Muay Thai for self-defense benefits, large numbers embrace the sport for fitness rather than its martial qualities. Training delivers excellent health benefits: greater strength, fat loss, increased endurance, increased quickness, and tremendous flexibility.

I haven't really exercised in a long time. Is this class going to be too intense for me?

One of the great things about kickboxing is that you start at your own pace, gradually increasing the level of intensity as you get more fit. The classes will push you, but ultimately, the intensity of the workouts is entirely up to you.

What makes your Muay Thai program different from what is being offered at other facilities?

First of all, we teach authentic Muay Thai, not cardio kickboxing. There's a big difference! Our instructors have extensive training and competition background in Muay Thai kickboxing. Beware of illegitimate instructors and schools who advertise Muay Thai classes when their real background experience is Karate, Tae Kwon Do, if even. Our classes are designed so that beginners can set their own individual pace and progressively increase their level of intensity. Individual attention to technique execution is a feature in every class. After just a few lessons, you will understand why no other school's program can match what we offer.

Is there any contact in your Muay Thai classes?

Yes, there is contact in our Muay Thai program through warm-up drills, partner drills, and sparring (when you are technically eligible to do so). Although, you don't have to participate in any sparring activity unless you choose to test your skills, which we will always recommend. Sparring is a lot of fun but completely optional. In the classes, you will learn to hold pads for your training partners and practice defensive and offensive striking combinations with your hands, feet, elbows, and knees.

How long does it take to get results with Muay Thai as far as conditioning goes?

Results are almost immediate depending on your workouts' frequency, intensity, and duration. Our Instructors are there to guide and motivate you, but ultimately, the intensity level of your training is up to you. On average, within the initial two weeks, you can look for an increase in energy level; the following weeks for a change in the way your clothes fit; by the second month, you can notice a difference on the scale. Remember that an appropriate diet will always increase results. Results may vary.

What's the average calorie loss per class?

This will vary according to how hard you want to push yourself. It can range anywhere from 600 to 1000 calories per class (55 minutes).

What's the class format like?

The class format may change from time to time to provide workout variety. Still, the typical class starts with two or three rounds of jumping rope, which will help you develop footwork improve coordination and cardio capacity. This warm-up period will be followed by two rounds of shadowboxing, which will help improve your striking technique and further your footwork. Hitting the heavy bags to improve your technique, stamina, and power for a few rounds will follow. Partner drills with or without hand mitts/Thai pads will conclude the class.

Is Muay Thai kickboxing good for self-defense?

It depends on how you train. With good power, accuracy, and speed, the strikes of Muay Thai can be devastating. Despite being an extremely empowering and fun class, if you are looking solely to improve your street self-defense skills, we highly recommend you to sign up for the Jiu-Jitsu program instead.

Are there any tournaments or competitions around the area if I want to compete?

Yes, we have a competition team that competes 4, 5 times a year. This will require an extra level of commitment from you. Competition isn't a right, but a privilege only reserved for those willing to sacrifice and commit to the training. If the instructor feels that you have been putting in the necessary work to perform well at a competition, he will let you know.

I've never done any sports before. How often should I attend classes so I don't overdo it initially?

If you have never done any sports before, we recommend starting your training with two classes a week for the first few months. This will ensure your body gets used to the exercises and repetitions we practice throughout the class. As a reminder, private lessons are also a great way to learn the fundamentals and ease you into the group classes.

Will there be other beginners in class like me?

Yes! We have new members joining practically every week, and about 90% of them have never trained before! One thing they all have in common is, they all got hooked after their first class!

When do you offer classes for adults?

Currently, we offer classes three days per week. As demand for the classes increases, we will add more options for our students. Classes are currently held on Monday and Wednesday at 9:30 am and 6:00 pm, Friday at 6:00 pm, and Saturday at 10:00 am. Besides our instructional program, we also provide "open mat" times for those who want to come in and work out independently. In addition, private lessons are also available, which can be scheduled for any time in the day.

What's the youngest age someone has to be to join the adult program?

14 year olds may join the adult program. Even some 13-year-olds have joined in the past; however, that can only be decided after a trial lesson to access the student's size and maturity level.

Is Muay Thai safe for my teen daughter/son?

Absolutely! We pay great attention to safety. It is always our top priority. All class rules and etiquettes are in place to maximize our students learning experience and minimize injuries, and our instructors are trained to strictly enforce them.

What benefits will my teenager have from the Muay Thai classes offered here?

Besides the obvious fitness benefits, shy teens who lack assertiveness and self-confidence tend to improve their social skills and make new friends, being that partner drills take place in every class. Some of your teen's training partners will include Police Officers, Nurses, Firemen, School Teachers, Moms & Dads, and competitive athletes.

Why do you require a 12-month agreement?

One or two months of practice won't provide new students the results in conditioning, skill, and other physical and mental attributes that a minimum of a full year will.
