Instructor Rick Hoffman
Rick Hoffman
Rick Hoffman's martial arts journey began in his teenage years, inspired by the early UFC tournaments that captivated many Jiu-Jitsu practitioners worldwide. Witnessing Professor Crosley Gracie’s cousin, Royce Gracie, dominate much larger and stronger opponents with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques ignited Rick's curiosity and passion for the art.
In December 2005, while attending the police academy, Rick sought out a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school to join. To his surprise, Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu had just opened its doors earlier that year in Brentwood. Without hesitation, Rick joined immediately.
With 19 years of experience in law enforcement, Rick has held various roles, including positions in the Gang Unit, Investigations Division, and SWAT Team. His extensive experience as a SWAT Team operator and Defensive Tactics instructor has enabled him to integrate Gracie Jiu-Jitsu techniques into law enforcement practices for effectively handling violent situations.
Rick’s commitment to the training over the course of nearly two decades while balancing a full-time job and raising four children is a testament to his character. He often attended class without sleep after patrolling the streets following graveyard shifts. In December 2021, Rick deservingly achieved the prestigious rank of Black Belt under Crosley Gracie. He now shares his grappling expertise in the Academy’s Adult Jiu-Jitsu Program.
Rick's true passion lies in educating others on the self-defense benefits of Jiu-Jitsu, especially for fellow police officers, to enhance their safety on duty. His dedication to Jiu-Jitsu is evident, as his entire family, including his wife and children, train at the academy. Notably, his oldest daughter, Sariah, has come full circle by serving as an assistant instructor in the Youth Program after beginning her journey in the 8-11-year-olds’ Program.
