EMPOWER YOURSELF FOR LIFE BY JOINING OUR JIU-JITSU PROGRAM

A person's primary reason for joining martial arts varies. Some people join to get in shape or for the stress-relief benefits it provides. Others wish to improve their confidence, discipline, and self-control or to be part of a positive and empowering environment. But overall, most people join because they understand Jiu-Jitsu's superiority over other martial arts styles and choose to train due to its incredible effectiveness in hand-to-hand combat and street self-defense.

Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defense system based on leverage, timing, and technique, not speed and power. Therefore, anyone can learn and apply. It consists of grappling techniques that teach practitioners to neutralize aggressors of any size and strength by way of joint locks and chokeholds.

Classes are offered in groups, the best fit for most students, and in private settings. With the recommended attendance of a minimum of two weekly classes (group lessons), 100% of our students achieve improved fitness levels and confidence within just a few months of training. But these are only a few benefits of what continued training can do for anyone who dedicates themselves.

Jiu-Jitsu transfers thousands of teachings to everyday life:

  • It teaches you to respect hierarchy
  • It teaches you never to underestimate anyone
  • It teaches you to be accountable for your actions
  • It teaches you not to victimize yourself
  • It teaches you to believe in yourself, no matter how tough things may seem
  • It teaches you to solve problems
  • It teaches you not to freeze up and panic when facing a challenging situation
  • It teaches you to be mentally strong when you may not be physically strong
  • And much more...

It is the perfect tool for teens to channel their energy towards a healthy and rewarding activity and address bullying efficiently and humanely (check out our Kids Jiu-Jitsu page here).

For women, it offers realistic preventive and escaping strategies should they become a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault by strangers and non-strangers. The close-proximity nature of the techniques teaches women to feel comfortable with anyone inside their "bubble."

For law enforcement officers, it provides the tools to control and cuff a non-compliant suspect without physical damage or assistance from other colleagues.

WOMEN'S JIU-JITSU

Feeling awkward and out of place in a male-predominant activity is absolutely normal. But like everything else, you’ll overcome these mental obstacles over time.

Jiu-Jitsu training is ideal for any woman, not just because it’s the most realistic and practical self-defense system today, but because it is purpose-giving, stress-relieving, physically empowering, and helps improve physical, mental, and emotional health. It’s also challenging and fun, allowing any female, especially Moms, to have their own “me time!”

Moms are passing things down to their kids all the time. Why not give them the gift of a confident role model with a healthy dose of self-respect? Why not show them through your actions how a leader perseveres?

Check out other amazing benefits of our Jiu-Jitsu Program for women:

MENTAL HEALTH

  • Combat anxiety, depression, and chronic stress
  • Improve confidence, self-reliance, and self-esteem
  • Improve critical thinking
  • Better your sleeping habits

EMOTIONAL HEALTH

  • Develop a new way to bond with your kids (if you are a Mom and they also train)
  • Fewer mood swings due to the constant release of endorphins
  • Reduce or eliminate aggressive behavior
  • Enhance your problem-solving skills
  • Prevent panic response when faced with stressful situations

PHYSICAL HEALTH

  • Body awareness: Jiu-Jitsu teaches you to love your body for what it can do, not what it looks like
  • Lose weight and tone your body
  • Improve your fitness levels
  • Improve motor skills and develop tenacity

If you are not yet ready to commit to the training, stay tuned for one of our yearly street self-defense seminars, which is a GREAT way to get introduced to Jiu-Jitsu's approach to Self-Defense.

CO-ED BEGINNERS' PROGRAM

The primary goal of the Beginners Program is to prepare its students for the intermediate stages of the training, where more complex techniques are taught and sparring is added to the curriculum.

Every class consists of mobility and grappling-based exercises to enhance coordination and motor skills. The week's curriculum follows, and students drill cooperatively with one another until the end of the class.

This cyclic 12-week Program was designed so beginners can learn the material in any order, allowing anyone to join the Program anytime throughout the year.

Upon completing the Beginner's Program, students earn their first stripe and eligibility to enter the Intermediate Program.

HOW DO OUR JIU-JITSU CLASSES WORK?

All classes are 60 minutes long and typically broken down into four stages:

  • Warm Up - Functional exercises designed to increase mobility, strengthen the body, improve coordination, and heighten cardio capacity.
  • Drills - Students pair up and drill techniques relevant to the material covered during the month. Intense drilling is essential to develop skills to the fullest, and all of the programs at Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu were designed following this belief. Drilling rounds go for 2, 3, 4, or 5-minute increments. The length of the round will depend on the complexity of each drill. This critical stage of the class helps students develop muscle memory and reflexes and improve timing and conditioning.
  • Specific Sparring (Intermediate and Advanced Programs only)- Students drill with resistance in this stage. The instructor sets particular goals, and if or when either student accomplishes them, they reset and try again until the time is up. More increased muscle memory and reflex development occur here.
  • Full Sparring - Optional and only available in the Intermediate and Advanced Programs, sparring is undoubtedly the most exciting and fun aspect of training. It is as real as it gets! Students try to apply their techniques to fully resisting training partners, who are defending and counteracting with their moves. This aspect of the training teaches the students to feel comfortable in the most uncomfortable situations, aiding them in developing the ability to remain calm and think logically under pressure. It's also an incredible aerobic and anaerobic workout!

JIU-JITSU FOR COMPETITION

We recognize the difference between training for a competition and the self-defense aspect of Jiu-Jitsu. While competition is not mandatory nor expected of students, many enjoy competing to test themselves and their abilities.

Our Academy has produced many local, national, and international champions. However, most of our clients simply enjoy the training and all its benefits without ever participating in any competition. An accomplished competitor himself, Professor Crosley Gracie understands the difference between training for a competition and the self-defense aspect of Jiu-Jitsu.

Our school provides a positive environment for students with a great approach to personal excellence pursuit and realistic self-defense; however, we will always encourage and support any student who wishes to step up and compete. Tournaments are held throughout California, and our competition team has built a reputation as one of the strongest teams in the area.

THE UNIFORM AND RANKING

The uniform is a vital learning tool for your success. It teaches proper gripping and provides additional comfort while training. Unless specified otherwise, all classes require the use of a white Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu uniform as well as a belt of the appropriate rank for the class.

Our uniforms are manufactured with the highest quality material available, and it is the only brand of uniform allowed in the classes. Uniforms must be clean and free of strong odors, rips, or stains.

Ranking

A student’s rank is based on his/her knowledge, physical skill, length of time training, attitude, and overall quality of movement and understanding. While earning any particular rank is an achievement, placing too much focus on this as an end is a mistake. Focus on your training; develop as much skill as possible; have a good and exemplary attitude. Everything else will follow naturally.

Individual Lessons are available for those students who wish to advance more rapidly or study a particular area in greater detail. We recommend private lessons for all students since it allows one-on-one time with an Instructor.

All belts have four stripes. Upon earning four stripes and completing all classes at that stripe, the student can receive a higher belt rank at the bi-annual Belt Ceremony. Many variables contribute to how much time a student spends in each rank. The criteria are:

  • Attendance
  • Discipline
  • Effort

Assuming the student trains at the recommended rate of a minimum of two classes per week, stripes will be earned every three months (40 classes). When first learning a technique, we will focus on proper mechanics. The second stage will be working on smoothness of motion, and the third stage will add speed and power to the technique.

As you progress to an advanced level, there will be more focus on detail, sharpness, and a deeper understanding of how the techniques are applied. As you advance, the expectations become higher!

The Official Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belt Rank is as follows: White, Gray, Yellow, Orange, and Green for Kids; and Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black Belt for adults.

PROMOTIONS

All promotion of the students falls under the guidelines set by Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy. Consideration for promotion is given when a student:

  • Attends class consistently
  • Demonstrates proficiency in required material
  • Displays proper attitude and behavior
  • Maintains acceptable academics (Kids)

The criteria above are only a guideline. Many circumstances (e.g., age, prior experience, attitude, natural ability, etc.) account for students progressing at different rates. Students must remember that earning rank is a privilege, not a right. We offer Self-Defense instruction; however, rank progression is always earned, and it is not guaranteed.

Belt ceremonies are held twice a year, in the Summer and Winter, before the Holidays. With consistent attendance, each belt's average time varies from two to three years. Each belt has four stripes. Stripes are earned in an interval of a minimum amount of classes stipulated by our Academy.
