About Our Adult Jiu-Jitsu Classes

Think You're Ready For Our Adult Jiu-Jitsu Classes? Learn Everything You Need To Know Here:

People's primary goal in joining Martial Arts may vary. Some join Martial Arts looking to get in shape or for its stress-relief effects. Others wish to improve their discipline and confidence. But most come to us for Jiu-Jitsu due to its efficiency on actual street self-defense. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu gives anyone the ability to overcome any attacker regardless of size and strength.

What is Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu means “gentle, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding.” Jitsu means "art" or "technique" and represents manipulating the opponent's force against himself rather than confronting it with one's own force. It’s based on clinching and grappling techniques that utilize leverage, proper technique and timing as its principles. Gracie or Brazilian jiu-jitsu was created and developed by Carlos and Helio Gracie in the early 20’s in Brazil.

For 80 years, the Gracie family proved through no-holds-barred matches against heavier and bigger opponents that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the most efficient form of Self-Defense there is. BJJ, as it’s also known, it’s now practiced by every professional mixed martial artist in activity and is the primary form of Self-Defense taught to the military of many countries around the world.

BJJ training can be used for street self-defense (anti-bullying, rape prevention, law enforcement) and sport grappling tournaments. The philosophy behind Jiu-Jitsu's success lays in the following strategy:

  • Close the distance and clinch
  • Take the attacker/opponent to the ground
  • Establish a safe and dominant position
  • Finish the fight with the application of chokes or joint locks

Submit classes are taught in group settings that may range from 14 to 30 students per class, depending on the program. With consistency, 100% of the students achieve excellent fitness goals in just a few months. And this is just one of the side-effects you'll get from continuous training. You can view our full class schedule here.

This is a co-ed program for anyone 15 and over, with or without previous athletics experience. In fact, we specialize and have a program just for beginners (more details at the bottom of the page).

In addition to receiving Martial Arts training directly from a member of the Gracie Family all year long, our Academy is constantly hosting events with other Gracie family members such as Rodrigo, Royler, and UFC pioneer, Royce Gracie.

Jiu-Jitsu for Law Enforcement

Since the moves are based on close range grappling techniques, rather than strikes and kicks, the physical damage to the suspect is drastically reduced. Lawsuits and charges of police brutality are major concerns of department chiefs nationwide. Being able to control and cuff a suspect without physical damage or assistance from as many colleagues will result in a direct increase in officer morale, as well as an improved public image for the department.

Around 30% of the students from the Adult Jiu-Jitsu Program are law enforcement officers from many cities around the Bay such as: Antioch, Pittsburg, Livermore, Stockton, San Francisco, Berkeley, Richmond, Oakland, Hayward, Tracy, Alameda, Oakley, Concord, San Jose, Correction Officers and deputies from the Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Alameda Sheriff’s Office.

We are honored to be able to provide a training environment where local police officers can improve their professional skills and prepare themselves more efficiently to protect and enforce peace while preserving their safety and the safety of others while doing their jobs in the line of duty.

Jiu-Jitsu for Competition

We understand the difference between training for a competition and the Self-Defense aspect of Jiu-Jitsu. While competition is not mandatory, nor expected of students, many students enjoy competing as means of testing themselves and their abilities.

With a competitive background ourselves, we encourage and support any student who wishes to step up and compete. Tournaments are held all over California and our competition team has built a reputation as one of the strongest teams in California, from the Children to the Adults and Masters Divisions. The secret to our success is our methods of teaching allied with hard, disciplined work. We believe in hard preparation towards a competition and while entering tournaments isn't required, we will demand complete dedication and focus during training camp for any event.

Jiu-Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts/Streets

Jiu-Jitsu has been adopted by every successful MMA fighter nowadays. It has been proven to be alone, the most efficient form of Self-Defense there is. Without any knowledge in Jiu-Jitsu, achieving the top of the ranks in any MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) organization would be just impossible. Our main focus, however, isn't MMA competitions. Instead, we prefer to focus specifically on Jiu-Jitsu for street Self-Defense.

As a group setting, we hold seasonal MMA camps in the Summer that consists of a 21-Lesson Program (7 weeks) for the adults, and a 30-hour Program (5 weeks) for the kids.

The same 21-Lesson Street Self-Defense Program is available as Individual Lessons as well. In the program, you'll learn how to use Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to close the distance and clinch on an opponent who's trying to hit you, take him to the ground, work your way up to a dominant position and finish the fight by the use of chokes or joint locks.

Class Format

Classes run from 60 to 90 minutes depending on the content and class size. The warm-ups are designed to improve your overall condition which includes several plyometric exercises and a wide variety of crunches for core strengthening and endurance. Warm-ups may include fighting simulation drills, such as clinching, takedowns and ground techniques. The technical part of the class is done by several rounds of repetitions according to the topic of the month. We believe that intense drilling is essential to develop your drills to their fullest.

Live training sessions will conclude the class. This is where all eligible students put into practice all the retained material against a training partner, who is fully resisting and counteracting with their own moves. This is undoubtedly the most exciting and fun aspect of Jiu-Jitsu. You'll learn how to remain calm and perform under pressure while figuring out the best route to take to win the match. This problem-solving skill that you will take with you outside the mat and into your personal and professional life, you can only learn with live training sessions.

12-Week Intro Program (Beginners only)

The Intro Program consists of a cyclic 12-week course incorporated into the all yearly memberships. That means you can start your training at any time, regardless of which week is in progress. With exception of the first two classes, all techniques included here can be learned in any order. The 12-Week Intro Program is designed to gradually improve your skill, coordination, reflexes, focus and overall stamina. You will learn how to fall and be comfortable on your back, and the basic applications of takedowns, attacks, and escapes standing and on the ground.

This initial stage of your training will prepare you to begin drilling at a full resistance pace (optional) in the following program.

Upon completion of the 12-Week Intro Program, you will earn your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stripe and eligibility to enter the Blue Belt Program.

Blue Belt Program (Intermediate)

Upon completion of the 12-Week Intro Program, you will begin to experience more resistance training in your routine (this type of training is done in a very controlled environment, where safety always comes first). This is as real as it gets!

You will drastically improve your conditioning, strength, and skill. You will drill and work with more experienced students, helping you progress quickly and confidently. Once in this program, you have the opportunity to upgrade your plan to unlimited training, allowing you to reach the next belt rank faster. Besides making huge progress towards mastery of the art, this stage of your training will give you the experience necessary to enter the Black Belt Program.

Black Belt Program (Advanced)

In this program, you will experience more live training and be exposed to more advanced moves. In this phase, you will witness incredible improvement not only on  your technique but your conditioning as well. Many blue belts and higher ranks at our school choose to enter competitions although, it is completely optional. Our Academy has formed many regional, national and international champions and encourages anyone who intends to compete.

Class Curriculum

The Black Belt Program is designed so intermediate and advanced students may benefit from the same class. The curriculum is also cyclic. It is divided into monthly and subdivided into weekly topics and cover from street self-defense techniques such as defense against weapons and various holds, to takedowns, attacks, and escapes from your back and more.

A student’s rank is based on his/her knowledge, physical skill, length of time training, attitude, and overall quality of movement and understanding. While earning any particular rank is an achievement, it is a mistake to place too much focus on this as an end. Focus on your training; develop as much skill as possible; have a good and exemplary attitude; everything else will follow naturally.

Individual Lessons are available for those students who wish to advance more rapidly or study a particular area in greater detail. We recommend private lessons for all students since it allows one-on-one time with an Instructor.

All belts have 4 stripes. Upon earning 4 stripes and completing all classes at that stripe, the student is ready to receive a higher belt rank at the following Belt Ceremony. There are many variables that contribute to how much time a student spends in each rank. The criteria are attendance, discipline, and willingness to learn/overall behavior. Assuming the student trains at the recommended rate of a minimum of two classes per week, stripes will be earned every four months (40 classes).

When first learning a technique we will focus on proper mechanics. The second stage will be working on the smoothness of motion and the third stage will be to add speed and power to the technique. As you progress to advanced level there will be more focus on detail, sharpness, and deeper understanding of how the techniques are applied. As you advance, the expectations become higher!

The Official Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belt Rank is as follows: White, Gray, Yellow, Orange and Green for Kids; Blue, Purple, Brown and Black Belt for adults.

Earning a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black belt is a life achievement. Many will try and most will fail. Only the committed and the strong will be rewarded with such gift. Generally, it takes longer to reach Black belt status than it would to receive a Master’s Degree. It is the belief of the creators of the art, Carlos, and Helio Gracie that Black Belts must only be presented to adults over 18 years of age. The Belts represents a character status, meaning one will be promoted not only as they learn, develop and refine their martial arts skills, but has gone through an extensive period of self-enduring tests which resulted in someone with an exemplary code of conduct and morals.

All promotion of the students falls under the guidelines set by Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Consideration for promotion is given when a student:

  • Demonstrates proficiency of required material
  • Displays proper attitude and behavior
  • Maintains acceptable academics (Kids)
  • Attends class consistently
  • Is always on time and always have his/her membership card to check in for classes

The criteria above is only a guideline. There are many circumstances (e.g., age, prior experience, attitude, natural ability, etc.), which account for students progressing at different rates. Students must remember that earning rank is a privilege, not a right. We offer instruction in Martial Arts, however, rank progression is always earned and it is not guaranteed. Belt ceremonies are held twice a year, in the Summer and Winter, before the New Year.

With consistent attendance, the average time on each belt varies from two and three years. Each belt has four tripes. Stripes are earned in an interval of a minimum amount of classes stipulated by our Academy. After Blue Belt, you'll go through Purple, Brown and finally Black Belt.
