Congratulations to James Vera, May 2025 Student of the Month!

Since beginning his Jiu-Jitsu journey in September 2023, James has consistently demonstrated the character traits we value most: kindness, respect, humility, and discipline.

Quiet and thoughtful by nature, he’s grown into a confident, focused, and determined young martial artist.

Over the past several months, James has made incredible strides not only in his technical ability and athleticism but also in his mindset and presence on the mat.

He approaches each class with effort and coachability, growing more comfortable sparring with students of all sizes and skill levels.

His fluid guard continues to evolve, showcasing his ability to stay composed under pressure and neutralize even the most aggressive opponents.

Last summer, James completed our 30-hour Youth Summer Camp, balancing intensive training in striking, takedowns, and grappling, all while maintaining his regular class attendance three days a week. That level of dedication speaks volumes!

He earned his Yellow Belt during our Winter Belt Ceremony and now stands as one of the highest-ranked students in his class, leading not just with skill, but by example.

At our academy, kids build real combat skills by training with partners who resist and respond. Every drill from day one is designed to prepare them for sparring, where they discover their strengths, overcome challenges, and grow in confidence.

They learn to stay calm under pressure, bounce back from setbacks, and confidently carry themselves. With real skills comes real confidence, helping them choose peace over conflict every time.

At Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, we are proud to recognize students who embody the true spirit of perseverance, and few represent it better than Maris Goldsborogh.

A student for nearly half of our 20-year history, Maris, 58, is a retired San Francisco police officer whose passion, humor, and resilience inspire everyone who shares the mats with him.

Years ago, after surviving a devastating head-on collision caused by an oncoming driver while returning home from work, Maris faced immense physical challenges. Yet, through determination and adaptability, he continued his Jiu-Jitsu journey, modifying his training while never stepping away from his commitment.

Maris’s presence extends far beyond regular classes. He attends every belt ceremony and guest seminar, setting an example of dedication, community support, and lifelong learning for students of all ages.

Maris, your journey motivates us all. Thank you for being a true pillar of our Academy.

Here’s to many more years of shared growth and inspiration together!

As students, some days, we bring maximum intensity to class, pushing our fitness and testing our limits.

Some days, we embrace lighter drills and mindful movement to work up a light sweat and improve our technical skills.

Some days, we mentor lower belts and hone our teaching skills.

Some days, we want to step away from our screens to reconnect and share laughter with our mat family.

Recognizing and honoring each facet of training, physical challenge, skill refinement, teaching others, and genuine camaraderie helps us grow holistically on and off the mats, keeping the journey more fun, meaningful, and long-lasting.

What are your top 2 favorite reasons to train?
