Join Us This Year For The 2018 Gracie Summer Camps!
The idea behind our Summer Camps is to provide all participants, children, teens
To those interested in starting their training in martial arts, these camps are the perfect opportunity. Most first timers end up joining the year-round programs after completing the camps. We maintain a ratio of about 10-12 students per instructor, which maximizes individual attention and subsequently, everyone's learning experience.
This is also a great opportunity to those who are only available to train during the Summer, such as children and teens who might be in town visiting relatives, or are busy year round with other activities, and adults who cannot commit to the training for more than eight weeks due to their busy work schedule.
Our Goals
- Safely introduce new students to martial arts and the Gracie System of self-defense.
- Polish and expand the skills of students with previous experience.
- Improve motor and social skills as well as listening & obedience skills for children.
- Empower participants (children) to be assertive, confident and socially prepare them for the new school year.
Our Instructors
Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts and staff
Our Curriculum
Although Gracie Jiu-Jitsu consists of hundreds and hundreds of techniques, only a few
The techniques we teach are within the phases below, which is Jiu-Jitsu's strategic approach to combat:
- Closing the distance and clinching
- Takedown
- Establish a safe and dominant position
- Finish the fight
Among the techniques the participants learn are:
- Managing the distance on an attacker who's trying to hit you
- Takedowns and counters
- Positional control strategies
- Escapes and reversals from the bottom
- Submission techniques (chokeholds and joint locks)
- Safety Strategies
2018 Kids Summer Camp
Typically, many parents enroll their children in martial arts for its incredible cross-training benefits that it gets carried onto other sports. Attributes such as mental toughness, hard work, focus, dedication, effort as well as strength development, explosiveness, coordination, balance are just some of
Although nothing compares to a longer-term commitment as far as results go, our 30-hour Kids Camps (10 sessions of three hours each) have surely helped all previous participants leave better athletes and students than when they came in.
In these classes, we also teach first-time students how to learn, how to listen and how to apply the techniques learned with training partners who are moderately resisting and counter-acting with their own moves. This training method is a great confidence booster as they practice under realistic conditions, much like I’d take place on the street, with exception of punches and kicks.
This is done in a very controlled setting, supervised by two Black Belt instructors and a few assistant instructors.
Ages
8 to 13-year-olds
Class Schedule
- June 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28
- July 3, 5, 10, 12
Classes take place from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Class Format
Warm up (40 minutes): 30 minutes of plyometric exercises to help participants develop/improve strength, coordination, balance, and heightened fitness levels. Many
Technical Drills (60 minutes): Participants observe the instructors and practice the techniques shown on partners of equal size. Depending on the difficulty level of the techniques, we divide the rounds into 2, 3, 4 or 5 minutes, giving every participant equal amount of times to cooperatively drill on one another. In addition to the techniques mentioned above, we also teach the children escapes from common attacks seen in schoolyard fight such as headlocks, bear hugs, etc.
P.S.: Moderate to full resistance training will occur to qualified participants only. Every year we have a blast. Like in all other year-round programs, we run a disciplined and well-structured class when it's time to learn, but we are super friendly and charismatic in the process. We incorporate fun games in every session, making it for a great learning experience for the participants.
Snack Break (30 minutes): During this time, participants take a break to snack, relax and play games.
Muay Thai Drills (30 minutes): In this phase of the class, participants move on to the Muay Thai training area to learn in more detail about stance and basic punching and kicking combinations. The goal here isn't to prepare them to strike an attacker as self-defense, instead, to show them what to expect from an aggressor/bully out there. And also for fun! After all, what child doesn't like to punch and kick?
Despite teaching them the proper way to do so, we make sure the participants understand very clearly that exchanging strikes with someone, bigger or not than them isn't a very reliable self-defense strategy.
If they can't diffuse a situation with words, they must rely on the four phases adopted by the Gracies to efficiently defend themselves and win a fight (closing the distance and clinching, takedown, establish a dominant position and submit the attacker).
Live Training (15 minutes): This last phase of the training is designed
Bullying and the Gracie Rules of Engagement
Throughout the camp we talk constantly about bullying and what steps to take to prevent and address it should they ever become a victim. We seat down and listen to their stories and offer advice. We allow the students to interact and talk about it, exchange information and comments amongst themselves.
We make sure they know exactly what to do, verbally and physically should a situation get out of hand. For more on bullying and the Rules of Engagement, please click here to visit the Kids Jiu-Jitsu Program page. (http://crosleygracie.com/classes/Kids-Martial-Arts-)
